Spotify is back with their 2026 Spotify Loud & Clear, an annual report they release to demystify how artists earn money through music streaming and highlight the global music landscape. This year there is a big focus on how the industry has improved for indie artists, and how the streaming revenue pool continues to grow. Here’s the TLDR:
- In 2025 Spotify paid out over $11 Billion to rightsholders (artists and labels), reaching a lifetime payout of $70 Billion
- There was a 10% growth from 2024 to 2025 in streaming revenue on Spotify
- About 50% of the royalty pool was paid out to indie artists and record labels
- More than 13,800 artists generated at least $100k in 2025 from Spotify alone, and 85% of those artists are from outside the USA
- In 2025 the 100,000th artist made $7,300, whereas in 2015 they only made $350
There is a lot to unpack here, and there are even more metrics to share. If you want to follow along at home and see even more information, here’s the link to Spotify’s Loud & Clear. Let’s start with a focus on indie artists…
Indie artist growth
My biggest takeaway from Loud & Clear this year is that indie music is gaining even more dominance. It might seem like the industry is controlled by major labels and gatekeepers, but the reality is music has never been more accessible and open than it is today.
About 50% of the $11 Billion royalty pool was paid out to indie artists and labels. It’s worth noting that ‘indie’ here essentially just means ‘not on a major label’ (the big 3), technically Disney is an independent record label.
This year is Spotify’s 20th year, and if you look back 20 years ago the top 50 artists generated 25% of streams – in 2025 the top 50 artists only generated 12% of streams. This is a massive shift in how people listen. One interesting stat I learned about Spotify is that the average listener listens to 200 artists per month, with 100 being new artists they’ve never listened to before.
If you were to rank every artist on Spotify from most streamed to least streamed, and then look at slot 100,000 (so the 100,000th biggest artist on Spotify)… In 2025 the 100,000th artist made $7,300, whereas in 2015 they only made $350. Meaning there are 100,000 artists making at least $7,300. This is a 20x increase.

Spotify made an interesting distinction from indie to ‘DIY’. More than 1/3rd of artists generating over $10k on Spotify either are currently DIY or started off as DIY. DIY is defined as not only indie, but also releasing their music themselves on a self-serve distributor like DistroKid, Tunecore etc – no label involvement at all.
Another interesting metric is that if you were to reach 1% of Spotify’s listeners, and get just 1% of their monthly streams, you’d make $1 Million per year from Spotify alone. It’s a crazy statistic, but it shows that you really don’t need to be a household name to be successful. You can live an incredibly successful music career while being pretty obscure.
The $100k growth
Let’s break down Spotify’s focus on artists making over $100k per year. This is an interesting area because to me it represents the point in which an artist is not only full time with their music, but they’re thriving. Keep in mind, this is $100k from Spotify alone. If you’re making $100k per year from Spotify alone you’re probably making at least $300k per year overall.

In 2025 there were 13,800 artists who made at least $100k from Spotify alone. Back in 2020 there were 7,800 artists who did the same. In 2025 there were 24,700 artists who made at least $50k from Spotify alone. Back in 2020 there were 12,500 artists who made at least $50 from Spotify alone.
This means that in just 5 years, the amount of artists making at least $100k and $50k per year from Spotify alone roughly doubled.
In most places $50k per year is a full time income, so Spotify alone ‘supports’ 25,000 artist’s livelihoods. And those 25,000 artists are likely making at least $150k per year. It’s kind of a crazy number to think about, but it is worth noting that there are something like 12 million artists on streaming platforms.
One interesting way to think about this number, is there are more artists making $100k per year on Spotify than there were artists getting stocked on record store shelves at the height of the CD era.
Other industry growth
I’ve probably purchased more than 50% of the concert tickets in the past year after learning about the show from Spotify. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that Spotify estimates they’ve driven $1.5 Billion in ticket sales in 2025.

40% of touring artists saw at least a 10% increase in their Spotify revenue driven by ticket sales.
Publishing rightsholders were paid out $5 Billion over the past 2 years, which represents a 2.5x growth over the past 5. years. I’m not sure why Spotify doesn’t show their publishing payouts by year, but the did say that 2025 was the largest payout in Spotify history for publishers. It’s worth noting that this figure is included in the $11 Billion of overall payouts, so it’s possible there was $2.5 Billion of publishing and $8.5 Billion for recording royalties, which would put publishing at about 22% (normally its around 20%).
Lastly, there were 16 different languages featured in the Spotify Global Top 50 in 2025. That’s double the number of 2020, which shows how music continues to get more and more global.
There is so much more featured in Loud & Clear, I highly recommend you go read it yourself to learn more.
