Spotify has been throttling AI artists since March despite announcing AI Personas starting in September. Human artists are also reporting significant algorithm changes this year, but the impact varies and remains unclear.
In a video I released last week I showed how Spotify has actually been throttling AI artists since March, despite their more recent updates regarding AI Personas which is starting sometime in September.
Today i’m actually talking about the comments on that video, because there seems to be a chunk of human artists who are also seeing drastic changes in their algorithm. Take a look at this comment with 33 upvotes and 11 replies.
And also this one with 23 upvotes.
So apparently there are a bunch of human artists whose algorithms are tanking this year as well - not fun!
I’m trying to figure out whats going on. The problem is when I look at the artists I work with, none of them seem to have been impacted. Which brings me to how you can help…
If you think you’ve been impacted, please grant Spotify for Artists reader access to spotifyalgorithmanalysis@gmail.com so I can take a look.
I want to figure out why some artists are impacted and others aren’t, and how significant the impact actually is. These are some questions I hope to answer:
Is there any trend for genre, release timing, artist size, artwork type etc for artists that are affected?
Is the timing consistent across artists that are affected?
What percentage of artists that say they’re being throttled are actually being throttled, vs what is normal algorithmic change?
I think this would be very helpful to know, but it also allows me to talk to my contacts at Spotify with specific evidence and see if they can give me any answers.
On another note, by giving us S4A access to that email you’ll also be helping us run future Spotify algorithm studies! Don’t worry, all artist names will be anonymous for both my content regarding this issue and also future algorithm studies.
